Samsung Expecting a Series of Lawsuits Following Exploding Galaxy S7's

In this day and age, we have all but become totally reliant upon the advantages of smart phone technology. From checking the weather to managing a stock portfolio, the readiness and availability of a smart phone has become an irreplaceable component to our everyday lives. In the past several weeks, however, the much-anticipated Samsung Galaxy s7 has proven to do more harm than good, as scores of customers flooded the Samsung complaint department with reports of seriously dangerous exploding batteries – which could quickly cause severe burns and injury.

Now, the Samsung corporation is also facing a personal injury lawsuit from a Florida man after the phone exploded in his front pocket, causing severe burns to the sensitive area. According to the specifics of the lawsuit, which was filed in early September, the man sustained second degree burns to his upper leg, as well as third degree burns to his hand as he attempted to retrieve the device from his pocket. The plaintiff is seeking unspecified damages to cover the costs of his medical bills and lost wages – which is typical in product liability lawsuits.

Samsung has issued a massive recall of the devices, but not before hundreds of consumers – including children – were harmed by the defective batteries. In fact, a six-year old child was injured in New York after the device exploded in her hands. As well, over 50 reports were submitted to the Consumer Product Safety Commission concerning property damage caused by fires started in cars and homes.

As a general legal principal, manufacturers can face serious liability in the event a manufactured product proves unreasonably dangerous. Lawsuits involving consumer appliances and vehicles are some of the most common product liability lawsuits. However, this area of the law can cover anything from over-the-counter medication to unsafe meat or produce products.
